Jeffery F. Latkowski, Chief Engineer for the Laser Inertial Fusion-Fission Energy (LIFE) program, will be speaking on “A Pathway to Sustainable LIFE on Planet Earth”

It is now common knowledge that energy sources with a low carbon footprint are needed as soon as possible to limit the most catastrophic effects of global climate change. Currently, there is no available technology that can meet the demand in a cost-effective manner. Existing fission power, while safe and economically competitive, is not sustainable in its current form and still suffers from a means to dispose of the high-level radioactive waste. By combining fusion and fission it may be possible to extract a much larger fraction of the energy and greatly reduce the volume of waste. On such concept is the Laser Inertial Fusion-Fission Energy (LIFE) engine.
