This week’s Nightlife is the San Francisco celebration of Yuri’s Night:

logo-yurisnightThe Academy is thrilled to host this year’s Bay Area installment of Yuri’s Night, a

party celebrating both the historic first flight of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on April

12, 1961, as well as the launch of the first space shuttle exactly 20 years later. Yuri’s Night is a truly international undertaking, with more than 139 parties in 38 countries around the world over the course of 9 days.

You can’t have a celebration of Yuri’s Night without space-themed exhibits:

  • A spectacular 3D tour of the Moon and Mars in the Forum Theatre.
  • Interactive exhibits about NASA programs like SOFIA, LCROSS,NLSI, Kepler, NASA Robotics, and GigaPan.
  • Stargazing with telescopes and Academy experts on the Living Roof (weather permitting)
  • A live feed from the GORT telescope
  • Q & A with a NASA Astronaut

Throw in talks by some NASA-types:

  • 7 pm – Pete Worden (Director – NASA Ames)
    Settling the Solar System
  • 8 pm – Dr. Yvonne Pendleton (Deputy Associate Director – NASA Ames)
    We are Star Dust
  • 9 pm – Bruce Damer (CEO & Founder, Digital Space Corp.)
The EvoGrid: Evolving our way into the Solar System

If that weren’t enough, how about some planetarium action:

  • Fragile Planet (6:30 pm and 9:30 pm)
    The Academy’s daytime planetarium show
  • Tour Through the Universe (7:30 pm and 8:30 pm)
A custom presentation from Ryan Wyatt, Director of the Morrison Planetarium
